The Monk’s Head, Snodland — Our Story

A Victorian original with a community heart.

The Monk’s Head has welcomed Snodland locals since the 1860s, when George Barden, fresh from running the historic Monk’s Head at Larkfield, opened its doors on Constitution Hill/High Street. From the start it was more than a pub: a meeting place for friendly societies and neighbours alike. In 1869 the Hearts of Oak Benevolent Society gathered here, and by 1876 the Odd Fellows were holding lodge nights under this very roof.

Through the late 19th century Alban Burgess kept the bar, and in the modern era licensees like Frank Victor Vickery (1970–74) continued the tradition of a proper Kentish welcome. After a quieter spell and a long closure in 2022, the Monk’s Head returned to life under new hands with Courtney Williams and Adam Memmott - still independent, still community‑minded, and still the spot where stories start.

Today you’ll find live music on weekends, big matches on the screens, coffee mornings, and the occasional nod to our folklore. Yes, some regulars swear a friendly spirit named George still checks the pints are pulled right.

Cheers to the next chapter.
